Activity #1
Finding English Where it Doesn't Belong

Joseph Smith sent Martin Harris to present characters supposedly written in "Reformed Egyptian" to Professor Charles Anthon for validation. The good professor scoffed at the characters and sent Martin Harris on his way.  Perhaps he found the entire English alphabet, and the Roman numerals 0,1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9 within the set, like we did. Search for yourself.

B.H. Roberts Questions the Book of Mormon

Elder B.H. Roberts was the President of the Quorum of the 70's and a church historian.  He read a book called "View of the Hebrews," written by Oliver Cowdery's minister and published several years before the Book of Mormon. Roberts was shocked at how many themes within this book were also in the Book of Mormon.

Select the themes from the View of the Hebrews that also suspiciously occur within the Book of Mormon.

Suspicious Place Names

Many names of places within the Book of Mormon sound suspiciously similar to place names near Joseph's home. It's almost like he used them for creating content.

Help identify places named in the Book of Mormon that seem to match places near his house.

"Revealed" Doctrine Should Not Preexist

Amazingly, almost every piece of doctrine revealed to  Joseph Smith through the Book of Mormon and revelation already existed and was being taught or discussed elsewhere. It's almost like "Why did we need the Book of Mormon anyway?"

Help Angel Moroni proclaim the restored gospel by matching each gospel principle with it's preexisting source.  Use Google to learn about each source.

Help Joseph "Celestialize" with Other Women

Joseph Smith had many other lovers besides Emma.  Seven of them were teenagers, and eleven of them were married to other men. You can read and confirm this on the LDS Church's Gospel Topic Essay's website.

Help Joseph celestialize with many women while avoiding Emma, the Angry Mob, and the Angel with a Flaming Sword. (d6 = Six sided die)

Reverend Jonathan Edwards 1/2

Reverend Jonathan Edwards was one of the many igniters of the First Great Awakening in New England. He wrote about many christian concepts, 100 years before Joseph Smith was born.  

Many inspiring scriptures within the Book of Mormon sound suspiciously similar to passages in Jonathan Edwards books. It's almost like Joseph copied them and changed up the words a little.

Help identify the Book of Mormon verses that correspond to writings of Jonathan Edwards.

Amazingly, a book was published fourteen years before the Book of Mormon that contains many similar passages to what is found inside the Book of Mormon. Some even say that Joseph plagiarized from this book. What do you think?

Sailing to Moroni

As a child, Joseph Smith loved to read stories about Captain Kidd, the famed pirate.  Kidd visited the Camora Islands, who's capital city is named Moroni.

Help Captain Kidd navigate through the Indian Ocean to reach the city of Moroni, at Camora.  Legends abound of a golden treasure hidden in the side of a hill near Moroni, at Camora.

Just like his Dad, Reverend Jonathan Edwards Jr. was a Protestant Minister who lived before Joseph Smith was born. Mysteriously, many of his passages ended up inside the Book of Mormon.

He lived before the days of Joseph Smith, so it's more accurate to conclude Joseph copied off his papers, which you are not supposed to do.

Shoot-out at Carthage

Joseph Smith has amassed an army at Nauvoo that is 1/3 the size of the entire United States Army! Rumor has it he's been talking to the natives about a secret plan to overthrow the US government and establish himself and his council of 50 as King and Lords over America.

You are part of an angry mob protesting at Carthage Jail that has gotten out of hand. Nobody expected Joseph and Hyrum Smith to be armed with pistols while in jail!

Shots are firing off from both sides.  Try your best to avoid being shot at from Joseph Smith as you flee.

Lehi Copied Moses?

For some reason, the story of Lehi travelling through the desert with his family towards the promised land is suspiciously similar to the story of Moses and the children of Israel travelling through the desert for 40 years. It's almost like Joseph used one story to create the other.

Match the missing word to the corresponding blank where it is used in both stories.

Part 2 of Lehi's story, crossing the desert, is a close match to Moses and the children of Israel crossing the desert.

Match the word on the right with the two similar segments from both stories on the left.

The Curious Liahona

The Book of Mormon describes the Liahona as "...a round ball of curious workmanship; and it was of fine brass. And within the ball were two spindles;..." (1 Nephi 10:16)

Apparently, it was also a hand-warmer. Connect the dots to learn where Joseph Smith could have gotten the idea for a Liahona.

Hmmmm...the conversion story of Alma the Younger reads much like the New Testament conversion story of Paul.

Abinadi Copied Pilgrim's Progress?

Amazingly, the story of Abinadi in the Book of Mormon reads just like the story of two characters, "Faithful," and "Christian," in the book Pilgrim's Progress, written by John Bunyan back in 1678.

Match each word on the right with both narratives from the almost identical stories on the left.

Joseph Smith's Dad had Lehi's dream?

Joseph Smith Sr. had a dream in 1811 that reads just like Lehi's dream in the Book of Mormon. We know this because Joseph's Mom wrote about it in a family book.

It's almost like somebody put his dream in the Book of Mormon. Check it out yourself.

Brainwash Yourself

Is brainwashing for real? Yes. Brainwashing is the absence of critical thinking.  Healthy organizations always encourage critical thinking, manipulative organizations discourage it.

Critical Thinking has three steps:
1. Thesis (what you think right now)
2. Anti-thesis (if you are wrong, find out how and why you could be wrong)
3. Synthesis (what you now think, after having explored all sides of the issue)

Perform the activity here to brainwash yourself into a state called "elevation," and then fix it through critical thinking. Instructions are provided for both techniques on the activity sheet.

The Westminster Confession on Faith

Ratified by the English Parliament in 1648, somehow passages from the Westminster Confessions on Faith, drafted by the Church of England, appear in the Book of Mormon.

"Mormon
Blame Chart"

When Korihor left the church, he was struck dumb and was trampled to death. If only he had his Mormon Blame Chart, maybe he would have not met his dubious fate.

Fortunately, Korihor was a character in a fable, not a real person. Fables are created to teach specific lessons. What lesson do you think his story was supposed to teach to practicing Mormons?

Most people who leave Mormonism report much happier, simpler, and less stressful lives. For fun, create a Mormon Blame Chart so you can also pretend to think that, like Korihor, bad things happen to people who leave the Mormon Church.
